A summit planned for Saturday at the Kansas City Convention Center aims to inspire Black business owners and equip them with the resources, strategies, and connections needed to thrive in today’s competitive marketplace.

The Global Strategies Summit for Market Innovators — organized by KC Black Owned — is deeply rooted in its founder’s drive to uplift and empower Black entrepreneurs, said Chelsey M., who launched the summit in 2023 to augment her ongoing work.

“The inspiration for the Expanding Horizon Global Strategy Summit stems from a deep desire to foster innovation and collaboration among entrepreneurs and business leaders, particularly within the Black community,” said Chelsey.

“We recognized a gap in resources and support for Black businesses, and we wanted to create a platform where ideas can flourish, connections can be made, and strategic discussions can lead to actionable outcomes,” she added.

Supporting local on a national scale

The summit’s primary goal is to offer Black entrepreneurs opportunities to learn from industry leaders and to network with potential collaborators and investors through workshops, table discussions, and interactive sessions, said Chelsey M.

Support provided at the summit transcends local borders, she added.

“It’s a unique opportunity for Black entrepreneurs to access valuable insights, mentorship, and networking opportunities,” Chelsey said. “This support extends beyond Kansas City, as we aim to create a network that empowers Black businesses on a national scale.”

In addition to educational experiences, the summit is expected to showcase local Black businesses, giving them visibility and connecting them with partners and potential customers — a key part of KC Black-Owned’s mission to elevate the Black community through economic development.

“The knowledge shared at the summit aligns with our ongoing efforts to create sustainable growth and opportunities for Black entrepreneurs, ensuring that they have the tools and connections needed to thrive,” said Chelsey.

New additions for 2024

Since its inception, the Global Strategies Summit has grown in scope, with this year’s event featuring new partnerships, notably, Walmart, UMB Bank and National Geographic onboard as sponsors, and a diverse lineup of speakers.

“Our new sponsor, Walmart, will share insights on supply chain management and opportunities for local businesses within their framework,” said Chelsey. “UMB Bank will discuss financing options tailored for entrepreneurs, while a digital marketing specialist from National Geographic will provide strategies for leveraging digital platforms to reach broader audiences.”

Attendees can also look forward to learning from entrepreneurial coaches, as well as hearing a testimonial from an entrepreneur who successfully partnered with Target — offering real-world insights into navigating corporate relationships.

Saturday’s summit will also delve into some of the most exciting trends emerging in the Black business community, Chelsey said. Sustainability and social responsibility are increasingly central to many Black entrepreneurs’ business models, and digital transformation is another key focus, she noted.

Networking and mentorship

Networking will be a focal point of the summit, with several unique opportunities for participants to engage with speakers, sponsors, and peers, Chelsey said.

“Attendees will have unique networking opportunities, particularly through one-on-one sessions with our esteemed speakers and sponsors,” she explained. “This intimate setting will allow participants to ask questions, seek advice, and forge meaningful connections that can lead to valuable partnerships.”

Mentorship is also a crucial element, Chelsey said, noting KC Black Owned is committed to connecting attendees with seasoned professionals who can offer guidance and support throughout their entrepreneurial journey.

As KC Black Owned continues to expand its reach, plans are in place to leverage digital platforms to engage an even broader audience. Future summits plan to feature live streaming, virtual networking, and an online community where attendees can collaborate long after the event concludes.

“We want attendees to leave this year’s summit feeling inspired, empowered, and equipped with actionable strategies for their businesses,” Chelsey said. “Our message is clear: you are not alone in your journey.”
