Edison Spaces launching second location focused on flexible offices for startups

Edison Spaces, a firm that offers flexible, private offices to entrepreneurs and small businesses, plans to open its second Johnson County location this summer.

Focused on offering short-term lease options, Edison Spaces is launching its second locale in August at 7900 College Boulevard, on the corner of College and Metcalf. Owned by Kansas City entrepreneurs Tim Barton and Matt Druten, the 25,000 square-foot private office space provides month-to-month terms for its 44 office units.

“We’re excited to open the second Edison Spaces location, once again in Kansas City,” said Barton. “Multiple offices serving the Kansas City entrepreneurial and business communities has been a part of the vision for Edison Spaces sense its infancy,”

“We know small businesses are in the process of scaling, but often can’t predict their size in one year, much less three,” added Matt Druten, co-founder, and managing director. “That’s why we don’t lock them into long-term contracts. They can sign a three-month minimum contract and go month to month following. It’s our goal to help them grow in Edison Spaces and eventually, grow out of Edison Spaces.”

Founded in 2017, Edison Spaces’ first location is at 4400 College Ave., Overland Park. Offices accommodate between three- and eight-person teams, with sizes ranging from 300 to 1,400 square feet, and rental rates range from $1,500 to $4,000.

Each office is fully furnished and includes standard desk systems, an in-office lounge area, whiteboards, a coffee station, and WiFi. Large, open windows fill each space with natural light, which promotes productivity and creativity. Outside of the private office, tenants have access to business class amenities like network printers, high-tech conference rooms, common areas to greet guests, a break room, and mail delivery systems.

Druten — formerly CFO and president of Freightquote — wished he had the flexibility that Edison Spaces offers when he was building the company, which sold for $365 million in 2014.

“Edison Spaces is the office space we needed when rolling out our startups. A space nimble and quick that we could come in and hit the ground running,” Druten said. “Instead, we purchased office space with a long contract, and waited on Wi-Fi, furniture, and office necessities, in some cases, for months. Edison Spaces removes that barrier so small business can come in, plug in their computers and get to work immediately.”
