Startup Rewind
When: Jan. 4, 7:15 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
Where: Deer Creek Golf Club
The Startup Rewind is a new outlet for entrepreneurs and startup companies. The goal is to get the word out about new companies and ideas, while gaining feedback from the community of business leaders and other entrepreneurs. This format will help foster business networking and encourage those entrepreneurs who are creating tomorrows big ideas. The Startup Rewind takes presentation made at other entrepreneurial events from the Startup scene in Kansas City and replays them again. This gives them another chance to get themselves in front of more people who may have missed it the first time around, thus the name Startup Rewind. Startup Rewind gives these local entrepreneurs a short time to pitch their idea followed by questions and feedback from the audience. This valuable feedback will help encourage and grow their ideas and in turn build a better community through business and entrepreneurship. Come join us for some great ideas and out of the box thinking. Startup Rewind meets once monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at Deer Creek Country Club from 7:15am to 8:30am. The event is hosted and sponsored by the Overland Park South Rotary Club.

Focus On Yourself in the New Year: Expert panel discussion on career advancement for marketing communicators
When: Jan. 10, 7:15 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
Where: KU Edwards Campus, Regnier Hall
Start the year off by learning what the people who hire marketing professionals are looking for. We’re putting together a first-class panel of agency leaders and for-profit/non-profit corporate communications executives to get their takes on important questions like:
What skills do they look for in hiring candidates at their organizations?
What are the differences between working for a company or an agency?
What makes a good resume and what about other formats like an online portfolio?
How much do they value a master’s degree or a professional designation like the APR?
Is it acceptable for a recent graduate to submit samples of work from college?
How important are things like networking events, informational interviews and other ways to build your personal brand?
Come prepared to ask what you’ve always wanted to know and use the information to help you position yourself for further career growth. Networking opportunities with other participants (and the panel) will be available before and after. We’re partnering with the Integrated Marketing Communications master’s degree program at the KU Edwards Campus and the event will be at their convenient and comfortable facility in Overland Park.
Confirmed panelist include Liz Hawks, Sr. Vice President, Fleishman-Hillard; Lainie Decker, Director of Communications, New Directions Behavioral Health; Eric Morgenstern, CEO of Morningstar Communications (more panelists to be announced soon).

        By Tommy Felts | August 8, 2017

Momentum matters for a startup city, Ryan Weber said. A recent report ranking Kansas City in the middle of the pack among Midwestern startup hubs doesn’t factor in the ongoing rapid growth of the city’s tech scene, Weber, KC Tech Council president, said. International tech publication TechCrunch listed Kansas City as No. 9 out of…
